magento upgrade from Old version to New version steps

The best way would be following the below steps, I will never recommend Magento Connect Manager.

1. Take database backup on local system.
2. Drop the database and create database again with the same name.
3. Dump the database sql file into the newly created empty database.
4. Take the backup of  app/etc/local.xml file.
5. Download the latest magento from here download magento
6. Unzip and start installing magento.While installation take care of the following things
a) Provide database details same as the old magento db details like database name, username and     password must be same as old version database, copy these details from old local.xml file.
b) Copy the encryption key from old local.xml and put it in Encryption field text box ask while installation.
7) Magento will automatically upgrade the old database, no worry.
8) Once you have installed magento successfully. Your new upgraded magento site is using the database form old magento site.
9) Now copy your old design theme and interface/package to the new design frontend.
10) Copy the template and skin folders also, that you have changed accordingly.
11) Also copy your custom modules to new upgraded magento.
12) If you face any issue then clear the cache and "Reindexing catalog data".

I succesfully exported my products in a .CSV file. But when I try to re-import this same file, by adding the new products records, it doesn’t work and gives me theses messages :

* Starting profile execution, please wait…
* Warning: Please don’t close window during importing/exporting data
* Starting Mage_Dataflow_Model_Convert_Parser_Csv :: parse
* Error write to file batch_1.tmp
* Finished profile execution.

Solution:
Simply follow the step:
1) Open the Import All Products profile.
2) Click On Profile Wizard -> File Information ->;Data transfer: set as Interactive or check you have uploaded csv and save profile properly.
